People spend months planning their Viking kit. They usually get the big things right. But after they get to the Ren Faire, they realize they forgot about the small details. You see it happen every year. A guy in a Viking tunic pulls a plastic water bottle out of his bag. Things like that completely ruins the authenticity. This list covers the least obvious items people usually forget.

1. The DIY Foundation

Before you worry about the accessories, get your base layers right. Don't use polyester costumes. You need a proper DIY tunic, basic weapons, and your first drinking horn. Building your own kit looks better and fits the historical vibe. You can find great DIY linen tunic guides over at Instructables to get started.

2. The War Horn

Most people show up with a regular drinking horn. A real war horn is the unexpected piece of kit you actually need. It is the great way to signal your crew across a field and make a massive entrance. When you sound it, everyone at the Faire knows exactly where your group is.

3. A Token or Favor

You need a small item in your pouch for interacting with other Vikings. Think bone dice or replica coins. You can use them to gamble at a tavern table or trade with other people walking the grounds. Buying these in volume gives you plenty to hand out.

4. Leather Waterskin

Do not carry a modern water bottle. Hide your hydration inside a leather skin to keep the immersion alive. It looks authentic hanging from your belt and keeps your water cool.

5. Wooden Spoon and Bowl

Most Faire food comes in cardboard boats. Eating stew out of a wooden bowl with a hand-carved spoon just feels way better. Bring your own feast kit to be more authentic.

6. Viking Seax Knife

Every Viking needs a blade on their belt. The seax is the everyday utility tool of the Norse world, and it is highly practical at a Ren Faire. You will have some practical use for it, like cutting roasted meat, slicing cheese at your camp, or fixing a broken strap on your gear. Just remember to peace-tie the handle to the sheath with a leather cord before you walk through the gates so security lets you in.

7. Linen Haversack

A simple shoulder bag solves a major problem. You are going to buy stuff at the Faire. Do not carry your new loot around in a plastic bag or a modern backpack. A historical linen haversack would hold your gear and blend right into your costume.

Final Thoughts

In addition to everything we listed above, you should obviously not forget the most essential items. Bring drinking water to refill your waterskin. Pack sun screen. Bring cash in case vendors do not accept transfer. Bring a power bank, a pack of wet wipes, anti-chafing balm and some band aids. Just hide all that modern stuff deep inside your linen bag.
